Shii criticizes Japanese government’s shameful attitude toward antinuke UN discussions

March 29, 2017
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on March 27 met with Japan’s disarmament envoy Takamizawa Nobushige at the UN Headquarters in New York City, demanding that Japan be fully engaged in the UN conference on a nuclear weapons ban treaty.

On this day when the five-day conference began, Takamizawa in his address announced that the Japanese delegation will not attend the antinuke negotiations.

Criticizing this position, Shii said that the Japanese government took the rostrum only to bring forward its one-sided argument. Shii said that the government should support the mandate of the UN General Assembly resolution to negotiate a legally-binding instrument banning nuclear weapons.

Takamizawa in reply said that he will convey what Shii said to the Foreign Ministry.
