US soldier arrested for hit-and-run

May 30, 2017
The Okinawa Prefectural Police on May 29 arrested a 24-year-old U.S. soldier stationed at the U.S. Kadena base for an alleged hit and run.

The incident occurred earlier on the same day on a national road in Yomitan Village. A car driven by Staff Sergeant Miguel Angel Garza rear-ended the vehicle in front of it which was waiting for the traffic light to change, and immediately fled from the scene. The rear-ended car’s driver suffered from a whiplash injury.

With input from the U.S. military police, the Okinawa police visited Garza at his home to inquire about the accident. In response to the police inquiry, Garza admitted his guilt. The police said that as they detected alcohol four times the legal limit in his breath, they will also charge Garza for drunk driving.
