Employee salaries go down by \500,000 from peak

May 25, 2017

Data of the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs have revealed that annual compensation per employee in FY2016 decreased by more than 500,000 yen from its peak in FY1997 to about 4.66 million yen.

Because employees here include corporate executives who receive considerable amounts of remuneration, the actual wage level of “workers” is thought to be even lower.

Meanwhile, the number of working people went up by 6.9% during the same period of time.

In addition to the increase in the number of non-regular workers with low wages, the continuing restraint on regular workers’ wages have reportedly caused the drop in wages per employee in general.
