JCP: Election system should be changed to proportional representation system

October 15, 2011
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on October 14 at a press conference said that the House of Representatives electoral system should be changed to one centering on the proportional-representation system.

This comment was made following the Democratic Party of Japan call on political parties to take part in a meeting on a revision of the Lower House electoral system with the aim to discussing ways to realize vote value equity. In response to the call, JCP Diet Policy Commission Chair Kokuta Keiji informed the DPJ of the JCP participation in discussions.

Shi said, “In order to achieve equality in the vote value, the need is to abolish the current system, the combination of single-seat constituencies and proportional representation blocs, and introduce a new electoral system putting more importance on the proportional-representation system which most accurately reflects the public will.”
