JCP Shii talks with new Nago mayor

February 18, 2010
The recently elected mayor of Nago City in Okinawa Prefecture, Inamine Susum, on February 17 visited the Japanese Communist Party office in the Diet and talked with JCP Chair Shii Kazuo.

Shii congratulated Inamine for being elected mayor and said, “It is encouraging that you have definitely stated during and after the election that you are opposed to a new U.S. military base on either the land or the sea of Nago.”

Inamine said that local people are continuing with their sit-in protests to prevent the new base construction, rejoicing in their victory in the election. He stated, “I will adhere to my election promise.”

On the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station issue, Shii pointed said, “The most reasonable solution is an unconditional removal of the Futenma base. The government must negotiate with the United States from this position.”

Ishimine said, “Right. It is wrong if a solution in one place takes a toll on another place.”
