1,617 scholars oppose review of gov’t apology for wartime sex slavery issue

April 1, 2014
It has come to light that 1,617 Japanese scholars endorse the statement opposing the revision of the Kono Statement which recognized the Japanese military’s involvement in the so-called “comfort women” system during World War II and offered the government’s apology to victims.

Kanto Gakuin University Professor Hayashi Hirofumi, one of the initiators of the statement of scholars, released it on March 31 at a press conference in Tokyo.

The Kono Statement was issued in 1993 by then Chief Cabinet Secretary Kono Yohei of the Miyazawa administration.

Hayashi pointed out that the Abe government’s move to “re-examine” the Kono Statement will inevitably cause tensions with not only China and South Korea but also the international community, including the United States. He stressed that Japan’s sincere efforts to restore the honor and the dignity of the victims of the wartime sexual slavery system based on the statement’s spirit will lead to promoting friendship with its neighbors.

The news conference was also attended by other well-known scholars, such as Ritsumeikan University Special Guest Professor Ueno Chizuko and Tokyo University Professor Emeritus Wada Haruki.
