Japan’s media community protests anti-press terrorism in France

January 10, 2015
The Japan P.E.N. Club on January 8 issued a statement in protest against the terrorist attack on a French newspaper publisher.

The statement states that for whatever reason, acts of terrorism are unforgivable as they pose a threat to the right to freedom of expression and destroy the very foundation of democracy. The statement calls for a safer society to enable everyone to freely speak.

The Mass Media Information and Culture Union (MIC) on the same day also released a protest statement against the violent suppression of speech.

It states, “No matter what the reason is, any abuse of power or use of violence trampling down on free speech shouldn’t be allowed to happen in a democratic society,” and declares media workers’ resolve to continue working for the protection of the right to freedom of speech and expression.
