JCP Secretariat Head protests planned tax hike

Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira (center) in front of JR Shinjuku Station in Tokyo delivered a speech in opposition to the consumption tax increase to 10% scheduled for October 2019.

Koike said that domestic consumption has remained stagnant since the tax rate went up to 8% in 2014. In a situation like this, a further tax hike will devastate not only people's living conditions and small business owners but also the country's economy as a whole.

Koike also criticized the government for virtually deceiving the general public by saying that tax revenues from the 10% consumption tax will be used for social security services. However, in fact, it has been reported that the Abe government after the Upper House election will considerably cut back on medical, pension, nursing-care programs.
