More than 70% of Okinawans in referendum say 'No' to Henoko base project


In the Okinawa-wide referendum, more than 70% of voters expressed their opposition to the Henoko landfill work for the construction of a new U.S. base while 19.1% voted "Yes" and 53,000 said "Neither".
Regarding the referendum results, Governor Tamaki Denny pointed out that the number of "No" votes surpassed the required quarter of the eligible-voting population of 1,15 million and said that in accordance with the prefectural ordinance, he will transmit the outcom to the Japanese prime minister and the U.S. president.(Feb.24/2019, Okinawa)
