US military bullets found at dam construction site in Okinawa

April 16, 2017
In early April, spent bullets were found one after another at a dam construction site in Onna Village in Okinawa. They seem to come from U.S. Camp Hansen which extends over the village and three adjacent municipalities.

The dam is located about 100 meters from the fence of Camp Hansen. On April 6, a worker with a building contractor found a bullet which went through a water tank and was stuck in its bottom at the construction site. A week later, another employee noticed damage to his car which was parked near the site and found a spent bullet on the ground a few meters away.

Onna Village Deputy Mayor Hokama Takeshi said in anger, “Around 50 people work there every day. This could have resulted in injury or death.”

A local resident said, “We are annoyed day and night by the sound of gunfire from the base. Local farmers work in the fields right outside its fence. The U.S. military should implement measures to keep such an accident from occurring again.”
