Denki-Joho Union holds regular convention

September 20, 2023

The Denki-Joho Union, which organizes individual workers in the electronics and information industries and is affiliated with the National Confederation of Trade Unions (Zenroren), held a convention on September 17 in Tokyo, calling for the movement in workplaces to protect workers' rights.

Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Miyamoto Toru gave a speech in solidarity.

Denki-Joho Union Chair Maita Tokuji in his speech said, "The union played a significant role as a fort of resistance for workers. For example, a labor dispute between Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and its laid-off non-regular workers reached a settlement. An NEC subsidiary worker returned to work after his dismissal was withdrawn."

A Toshiba subsidiary worker said, "With help from the union, I won the withdrawal of a distant transfer order. Everyone, except for the union, used to tell me that I have no choice but to obey the order. The union fought for the revocation of the transfer order for me."

A Hitachi worker said, "I hope to continue working after the age of 65, but the company notified me of the termination of my contract. Hitachi itself says that it abides by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Criticizing the company for running counter to the UN principles, I'm fighting for my continued employment with help from the union."
