Union wins withdrawal of layoffs of Yamato Transport part-timers

October 28, 2023
Yamato Transport Co. has withdrawn its plan to terminate the employment contracts of part-time workers doing direct mail-sorting work, according to a light freight union which is affiliated with the All Japan Construction, Transport and General Workers' Union (Kenkoro).

The light freight union on October 16 held collective bargaining talks at the head office of Yamato Transport, demanding that the company cancel its mass dismissal plan associated with the end of its direct-mail business and stop forcing targeted part-time workers to sign and submit resignation letters. After the labor-management talks, the company retracted the notice of employment termination and presented a proposal for the relocation of part-timers affected.

A part-time worker in Kanagawa Prefecture said, “I had been driven into a corner, but I joined the union and participated in the negotiations with the company. As a result, we succeeded in protecting our employment. Together with the union, I will do my best in the interests of all Yamato part-time workers.”

Takahashi Hideharu, leader of the light freight union, said, “There are still many Yamato part-time workers who are worried about their employment security. We call on them to join us and negotiate with the company to keep their jobs.”
