Zenroren stages day of action to push large corporations to stop their unfair labor practices

December 7, 2023
The National Confederation of Trade Unions on December 6 staged a day of action in Tokyo to support its affiliates and workers fighting against unfair labor practices by large corporations such as IBM Japan and Dow Chemical.

The Zenroren-affiliated Japan Metal, Manufacturing, Information and Telecommunication Workers’ Union (JMITU) IBM Japan branch held a rally in front of the company head office. The union has been working to file a complaint with the Tokyo labor dispute board in order to put a stop to the company’s wage discrimination against rehired employees.

At the rally, a union member who experienced wage discrimination reported that pushed by union efforts, the company increased rehired workers’ monthly wage from 170,000 yen to 250,000 yen.

In front of the head office of the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in Japan, a rally took place to push the Dutch national flag carrier to withdraw its unfair dismissals of Japanese contract cabin attendants. Dismissed cabin attendants, who are in a legal battle with the airlines, asked rally participants to support their fight at the court of appeals. They demanded that the company accept a lower court ruling.

Calling for the withdrawal of unfair dismissals, the Zenroren-affiliated National Union of General Workers (Zenkoku-Ippan) held a rally in front of the office building of the Japan Acrylic Chemical Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the U.S. major chemical company, Dow Chemical. The Dow subsidiary in 2020 unilaterally closed its Nagoya plant and dismissed all factory workers.
