‘Ishin’ lawmaker makes hate speech against foreigners on provisional release from detention as asylum seekers

February 28, 2024

“There was a case of a body floating in the river,” “That has never happened before. (Some say) it may have been done by yet another foreigner,” and “In some areas, the situation is terrible.”

By making these remarks, “Nippon Ishin no Kai” representative Takahashi Hideaki at a Lower House Budget Committee meeting on February 26 demanded early enforcement of the revised Immigration Control Act which is slated for June.

The revised law has been criticized by the United Nations as a human rights violation because it ignores the human rights of foreigners in Japan and puts their lives in danger.

Takahashi said, “The details of the case are still under investigation,” but gave the impression that the case and overstayers provisionally released from detention may have been related.

The “Ishin” lawmaker insisted that the police should crack down on illegal immigrants in cooperation with the Immigration Control Agency and keep a close watch on foreigners who are on provisional releases.

His statements are the very hate speech inciting discrimination against foreigners.
