editorial  Cooperation among nations needed to stop massacre in Syria

June 12, 2012
Akahata Editorial (excerpts)

The Syrian government has been slaughtering their citizens since last year. President Bashar Assad is justifying the massacres by saying that he is fighting terrorism. Ignoring both the Syrian people demanding the democratization of their country and the international society seeking a peaceful settlement, the president tramples on international humanitarian laws, including the International Covenants on Human Rights which Syria ratifies.

The government of President Assad should promptly stop the military crackdown on civilians. The international community should work together to stop the violence in Syria. Furthermore, the goal must be achieved through peaceful measures.

A military intervention should be strictly avoided because such an action would violate the Charter of the United Nations and could divide the international community. This should be the lesson learned from the Iraq War. As there are various complex issues to deal with in the Middle East, the international community should take immediate action to solve the Syria problem before tensions in the region increases.
