2012 June 6 - 12 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

78% of Fukushima municipalities call for closure of all local nuclear reactors

June 6, 2012
In Fukushima Prefecture, 78% of all local governments have adopted a resolution calling for the decommissioning of all 10 nuclear reactors in the prefecture.

The resolution was petitioned by the Fukushima liaison committee of the Mothers’ Congress and the Fukushima chapter of the New Japan Women’s Association (NJWA).

It demands the closure of the 6 reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (4 of which are already slated to be decommissioned) and the 4 reactors at the Fukushima Daini plant. Both plants are operated by the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO).

Following the Fukushima Prefectural Assembly’s adoption of the resolution last September, the governor called for the closure of all the reactors in November and included the call in the Fukushima reconstruction plan. Since then, the adoption of the resolution has rapidly expanded to 46 out of 59 municipalities in the prefecture.
