Peace organizations call for support of Nago citizens in struggle against new U.S. base
"Let's support and encourage Nago citizens in their struggle to prevent the construction of a state-of-the-art U.S. air base in the City!"
An appeal was jointly issued on October 9 by the Central Action Committee for Abrogation of the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty, and its two Okinawan affiliates.
The appeal denounces the Japanese government for rushing to decide on the engineering methods and the exact site for the construction in defiance of Nago citizens' rejection of the plan as expressed in a referendum.
Also in view of the Nago mayoral election to be held next January, the appeal calls on members of democratic organizations throughout the country to concentrate their actions to support the people of Nago.
As concrete measures, it calls for collecting one million signatures aimed to "Defend Dugongs and peace," success to the Japan Peace Congress (from October 29 to December 2), and organizing solidarity with the anti-U.S. base struggle, including fund raising activities. (end)
