Finance minister: Consumption tax rate increase is necessary

Finance Minister Shiokawa Masajuro on January 19 said for the first time that a consumption tax rate increase will be unavoidable.

Discussing the issue on an NHK debate program, he said that the consumption tax rate increase will be necessary to secure major financial resources now that high economic growth can't be expected and because Japan is rapidly aging. (end)
