LDP Suzuki grabs government assistance for 'northern islands': JCP Sasaki
Liberal Democratic Party Dietmember Suzuki Muneo has interfered with the government Official Development Assistance (ODA) related to the "four northern islands," and pocketed at least 18.8 million yen (130 yen=1 dollar) from companies concerned. Japanese Communist Party Sasaki Kensho was speaking at the House of Representatives Budget Committee meeting on February 13.
'Humanitarian aid for the four northern islands (Kunashiri, Etorofu, Habomai, and Shikotan--all Japanese territories currently under Russian rule-ed.) started in 1992, and a total of 8.78 billion yen was used by 2000.
In particular, the government allowed an omission of a cabinet approval or the signing of official documents with the Russian government in dealing with ODA items on these islands, Sasaki said. This left room for an individual Dietmember to interfere in the government's foreign affairs, he added.
Sasaki revealed the fact that shipbuilding, construction, and other industry companies which received orders in this ODA-related business donated a total of 11.82 million yen to Suzuki during the six years (1995-2000).
Also, eleven companies which received ODA orders for African countries funded Suzuki with a total of 7 million yen in the six years, Sasaki said.
"A house of friendship" in Kunashiri Island is called "Muneo House," a sanatorium in Etorofu Island 'Muneo sanatorium,' and a four-wheel drive car "Muneo Car," Sasaki reported.
Prime Minister Koizumi Jun'ichiro had to say that Sasaki's research was well done, and promised that the government will investigate into the matter. (end)
