JCP urges government to oppose U.S. attack on Iraq
Warning that the U.S. attack on Iraq, if carried out, would trigger a regional war in the Middle East and bring about confusion all over the world, the Japanese Communist Party insisted that Japan's government oppose this plan.
In the October 10 House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee meeting, Matsumoto Zenmei of the JCP stressed that the U.S. Bush Administrations's preemptive strike strategy goes against the U.N. Charter and is opposed by most of the people around the world.
Matsumoto referred to U.N. General Assembly resolutions condemning U.S. aggressions against Grenada and Panama as violations of international law and urged the government to make efforts to prevent further illegal actions by the U.S.
In reply, Foreign Minister Kawaguchi Yoriko spoke for the U.S. saying that the U.S. will act within a sphere of rights and obligations specified in international law. (end)
