Japan Peace Committee urges UNSC member states to commit themselves to a peaceful solution of Iraq issue
The embassies of China, France, Germany, Russia, and Syria in Tokyo showed their willingness to exert their efforts to peacefully solve the Iraq question, in reply to the Japan Peace Committee's request on January 24.
UNSC permanent members China, France, and Russia stressed the need to find a solution through UNSC discussion. Germany, chairing the UNSC from February, recalled its scars of WWII and stated it will commit itself not to repeat a similar tragedy. Syria, also scheduled to chair the UNSC, expressed its opposition to a war by saying that the war will create another Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
At the gate of the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, 20 peace activists shouted, "No war on Iraq!" and handed out a written protest to an embassy official. (end)
