Pacific peace movement welcomes Gensuikyo's anti-nuclear campaign
Peace activists from about 30 Pacific countries and territories supported the effort of the Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) to prevent the U.S. pre-emptive attacks with nuclear weapons against other nations.
On January 24, the 9th Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific (NFIP) Conference held in Tonga adopted a resolution responding to the Japan Gensuikyo's signature-collection campaign calling for opposition to the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons, and demanding their abolition.
Participants in the conference, which takes places every 3 years as the general assembly of the NFIP Movement, discussed ways to gain independence from big powers and colonialism, to relieve nuclear test victims, and to defend indigenous people's rights.
Japan Gensuikyo was invited to the conference for the first time. In the process of drafting the resolution, Japan Gensuikyo National Board member Tsuchida Yayoi proposed including opposition to the dangerous U.S. strategy of the use of nuclear weapons in the conference statement and it was approved by the participants.
One of the meetings of the conference adopted a resolution in support of the defense of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution. (end)
