Lawyers request government's effort to avoid war on Iraq
The Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) on February 5 issued a statement demanding that Japan's government take the initiative in preventing a war on Iraq, as the government of the only atom-bombed country.
The JFBA, an organization that all lawyers in Japan belong to, pointed out in the statement, "It is clear that a war will take many citizens' lives, the worst form of human rights violation."
Quoting the preamble to the Japanese Constitution, "We desire to occupy an honored place in an international society striving for the preservation of peace," the statement demanded that the government, based on the constitutional idea of peace and international cooperation, call on the United Nations, the United States, Britain, and Iraq to peacefully solve the Iraq question.
