Self-Defense Forces start first refueling drill
The Japanese Self-Defense Forces have started their first aerial refueling exercise with U.S. forces in preparation for the introduction of their own refueling aircraft in 2006.
Akahata of April 22 reported that in the exercise, which is being held between April 21 and May 2, Air SDF F-15 fighters will be refueled by tanker aircraft from the U.S. Kadena Air Base in the airspace over Kyushu and Shikoku.
The Japanese government decided in December 2000 to deploy tanker aircraft with the aim of enabling fighters to stay airborne as long as possible in order to intercept enemy planes.
Tanker aircraft make it possible to drastically increase the range of fighters. Defense Agency Director General Ishiba Shigeru said the SDF's possession of the capability to attack enemy bases outside of Japan is "worth sincere study."
The Air SDF plans to dispatch six F-15 fighters for multi-national exercises in Alaska in June sponsored by the U.S. Air Force. These fighters are scheduled to be refueled by U.S. tanker aircraft on their way to Alaska. (end)
