All 11 JCP candidates elected to Adachi Ward Assembly
In Tokyo's Adachi Ward Assembly election held on May 18, all 11 Japanese Communist Party candidates, including two new candidates, were elected.
Although this was the ward's first assembly election after the number of seats was reduced by six to 50, the JCP's share rose to 22 percent from 21.4.
The JCP's call for a policy shift from one of giving large development projects priority to one of safeguarding livelihoods by not raising nursing care insurance premiums enabled its candidates to receive large support.
During the election campaign, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komei Party concentrated their attacks on the JCP.
In an election for the ward mayor on the same day, former mayor Yoshida Manzo (recommended by the JCP) got 36.5 percent of votes but lost to the incumbent mayor Suzuki Tsunetoshi (recommended by four parties including the LDP and Komei). (end)
