U.S. Marine indicted on charge of rape

Prosecutors indicted a 21-year old U.S. Marine stationed in Okinawa on a charge of raping a woman. Akahata of July 8 reported that the suspect has admitted to committing the crime.

The Naha District Prosecutor's Office charged Jose Torres, a U.S. Marine lance corporal stationed at U.S. Camp Hansen, with raping a woman in Kin Town on the early morning of May 25.

The indictment came two days before the expiration of legal detention in the local police station. Torres was the third U.S. soldier in Japan to be handed over to Japanese police before indictment. (end)
