Foil constitutional revision through majority opinion

The Liaison Council for Various Circles for Prevention of Mal-Revision of the Constitution in its 39th national meeting on March 7 adopted a policy of strengthening the action to prevent constitutional revision by arousing opinion against it from a majority of the people, while arguments for textual revision became louder.

The Liaison Council's General Secretary Kawamura Toshio, in proposing the policy, explained the need to propose it now. He said that the dispatch of the Self-Defense Forces to Iraq has exposed the biggest contradiction between reality and the Constitution's Article 9 and that revising the Constitution's text has come up on the political agenda.

The Liaison Council will develop the movement nationwide in various forms such as study meetings, publicity campaigns, signature drives, and rallies.

The Liaison Council was established in 1965 to develop a major nationwide movement to prevent the Constitution from being adversely revised. Its members comprise such organizations as trade unions, organizations of citizens, women and youth, democratic and peace organizations, and individuals such as researchers on constitutional law and history as well as lawyers.
