Zengakuren call for a good study environment at universities

The All Japan Federation of Student Unions (Zengakuren) held its 55th Congress from March 5 to 7 in Tokyo and adopted a resolution calling for building universities that can provide students with a good study environment.

The resolution called for activities to meet the various demands of students and efforts to get as many students as possible involved with the student unions. It also called for events to welcome freshmen to be organized.

In the discussion, many speakers focused on the issue of national universities being turned into independent administrative institutions starting this April. Many delegates expressed their schoolmates' concern that their tuition might be raised.

In order to respond to their concern, Zengakuren has proposed a signature collection campaign to block a tuition increase and to demand an increase in subsidies for universities. (end)
