Teachers protest against punishment over 'Hinomaru' and 'Kimigayo'

On March 29, eight public school teachers in Tokyo who were reprimanded for failing to comply with the Metropolitan Board of Education order concerning school ceremonies raised their voices demanding that the punishments be revoked.

The board of education last October issued detailed instructions on procedures for school entrance and graduation ceremonies making it obligatory for teachers to stand up in front of the "Hinomaru" (the rising sun) flag and sing "Kimigayo" (may the emperor's reign be forever) with students.

Ten teachers were reprimanded for their refusal to comply with the order in school ceremonies during November and December.

Eight teachers claimed that the guidelines are unconstitutional and in violation of the Fundamental Law of Education. They also insisted that the board's punishment infringes on the constitutional freedom of thought, belief, and expression. (end)
