Gensuikyo calls for preparation of anti-nuclear conference to be strengthened
Representatives of the Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Gensuikyo) on June 3 published a statement calling on its local branches and affiliated organizations to strengthen their efforts for success of the 2004 World Conference against A & H Bombs which will be held in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August.
The statement pointed out that the U.S. infringed on the final document of the 2000 NPT Review Conference urging nuclear weapons states to make efforts for the total elimination of nuclear weapons, while public interest in the World Conference and its signature campaign "Abolish Nuclear Weapons Now!" is increasing.
In order to develop the anti-nuclear movement toward next year, the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the NPT Review Conference in the spring of next year, Gensuikyo encouraged peace activists to invite a wide range of people to participate in the World Conference.
The statement also stressed the need to carry out anti-nuclear campaigns in the House of Councilors election in July. (end)
