Okinawa election results

In the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly election on June 6, the Japanese Communist Party won three seats. During the campaign, it called for the removal of the U.S. military bases from Okinawa and a self-sustaining local economy.

Although the JCP lost one seat it previously had, it obtained 12,000 more votes or 1.3 times more than that for the JCP in the last House of Representatives proportional representation constituency election.

In contrast, the Liberal Democratic Party won 11 seats, down eight from its previous strength.

Out of the 48 newly elected assembly members, 29 are in opposition or show reluctance to the construction of the U.S. new base in the sea off the Henoko district of Nago City, while only 19 express support.

The election outcome reflects an anti-U.S. new base climate in Okinawa, said Akahata on June 8. (end)
