City opposes U.S. Marines relocation to their community

The City Assembly of Gotenba, Shizuoka Prefecture, on October 14 adopted an unanimous resolution in opposition to the planned relocation of part of the U.S. Marine Corps stationed in Okinawa to Camp Fuji located in the city.

Camp Fuji is part of the Self-Defense Forces Higashifuji exercise field that stretches into three municipalities, including Gotenba City.

Since 1959, the Japanese government and the three municipalities have signed an agreement every five years for the use of the exercise field that includes private lands. The agreement stated that the Camp Fuji site will be returned sometime in the future.

The resolution pointed out that the relocation plan runs counter to the agreement. (end)
