Metropolitan labor office searches major electrical appliance retailer for failure of overtime pay

The Tokyo Labor Bureau on November 25 searched the headquarters and three other offices of Bic Camera, a discount electrical appliance retailer, on suspicion of failing to pay workers for overtime work.

The company is believed to force employees to work overtime beyond the limit set in the labor-management agreement and fail to pay overtime allowances, in violation of the Labor Standards Law.

On November 25, Kansai Electric Power Company announced that it was advised by the Labor Standard Inspection office to pay employees back wages for overtime at more than one office.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company on November 18 announced that it has failed to pay 90 percent of workers at its main office, or 2,800 workers, about 1.4 billion yen in back pay for overtime. (end)
