Okinawan college holds concert calling for an end to U.S. military aircraft flights

In Okinawa, about 5,000 people attended a concert on December 19 at Okinawa International University (OIU) in Ginowan City calling for a halt to U.S. military flights.

The "NO FLY ZONE" concert was organized by teachers, staff, and students of the OIU where a U.S. military helicopter crashed in August.

OIU students and alumni performed traditional Okinawan music and dance. The popular rock band "MONGOL 800" played free of charge. Vocal Uezu Kiyosaku is a OIU graduate.

Ginowan Mayor Iha Yoichi gave a speech as a vice-chair of the organizing committee.

A U.S. military helicopter crashed at the university campus on August 13 after taking off from the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station which is located next to the university. (end)
