City assembly opposes nuclear-powered aircraft carrier deployment to Yokosuka

On February 22, the Yokosuka City Assembly in Kanagawa Prefecture adopted a unanimous resolution against the U.S. military plan to deploy a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to the U.S.Yokosuka Naval Base.

On February 10 at the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, Adm. Vern Clark, the U.S. Navy's chief of naval operations, revealed the plan to replace the conventional aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk stationed in Yokosuka with a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in 2008 or 2009. The resolution was a protest against Clark's statement.

The Yokosuka City Assembly stated that it strongly opposes the deployment plan, considering residents' opinions as well as their security. (end)
