Largest number of workers received compensation due to mental illness A record 130 people received work-related accident insurance compensation in fiscal 2004 due to mental illness caused by excessive workloads and stress. According to the Health, Labor, and Welfare Ministry, in FY 2004, 524 workers, 77 more than the last year and also a record high, applied for the insurance compensation. They were suffering from depression, PTSD, and other types of mental illness. Among the 130 compensated workers, 45 have already committed suicide, the largest number ever. By age, workers in their 30s topped the list (53 workers), followed by those in their 40s (31 workers). Among 335 applicants, 150 cases were recognized as "karoshi" (death from overwork) due to brain and heart malfunctions. -- Akahata, June 18, 2005 |
