Action and cooperation for nuclear-free world called for in preparation for 2005 World Conferencde

The main theme of this years' World Conference against A & H Bombs will be "The 60th Year of the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki - Action and Cooperation for a Nuclear Weapon Free, Peaceful and Just World."

It was approved by the Organizing Committee of the World Conference on June 15.

The committee on the same day issued a special appeal entitled "Let us strive to bring success to the 2005 World Conference against A & H Bombs in the 60th year of the atomic bombings."

Referring to the visit of a Japanese delegation to New York on the occasion of the NPT Review Conference in May, the appeal stressed that the Review Conference underlined the U.S. Bush administration's outrageous refusal to eliminate its nuclear weapons while pointing out that the calls for a nuclear-free world is spreading throughout the globe.

It cited strong expectations coming from inside and outside Japan for this year's World Conference to be an opportunity to block the Bush administration's outrageous actions and increase efforts to get nuclear weapons abolished, adding that the organization committee is receiving requests for participation from overseas almost everyday.

The appeal stressed the importance of efforts to bring success to the World Conference as a place to develop solidarity and cooperation between state and local governments as well as NGOs.

It called on anti-nuclear activists in Japan to do their utmost to send many grassroots-based delegates to the World Conference, encourage young people to participate in the international youth rally, and to strengthen the "Abolition Now!" signature campaign. -- Akahata, June 17, 2005
