Japanese peace groups remember Lugouqiao incident and pledge defense of Article 9

On July 7, the day when the Lugouqiao (Marco Polo Bridge) incident occurred, marking the start of Japan's full-scale war of aggression against China, the Japan-China Friendship Association and the Japan Peace Committee together held a meeting in Tokyo to discuss the importance of the war-renouncing Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution.

The main speaker was Komori Yoichi, a professor at Tokyo University.

Referring to the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, which are now stationed in Iraq, and the on-going moves developing to adversely revise the Constitution, Komori said, "The present-day situation shows that another Lugouqiao incident can happen at anytime."

He also said, "It is important to note that Article 9 continues to be effective in blocking the SDF from using force in Iraq." - Akahata, July 9, 2005
