Scientists against A & H bombs meet in Tokyo

The Scientists Forum for the 2005 World Conference against A & H Bombs was held on August 1st in Tokyo, attended by about 140 academics and researchers from various fields of natural and social sciences and the humanities.

Christopher Weeramantory, former vice-president of the International Court of Justice, gave a lecture entitled "Illegality of nuclear weapons and scientists' responsibility." He stressed that since statesmen and soldiers alone cannot make nuclear weapons, scientists have a great role to play in opposing such weapons.

Six Japanese participants, including Niihara Shoji, nuclear issues expert, and Sawada Shoji, physicist, gave reports, followed by discussions on ways to further develop the movement to get nuclear weapons abolished. -- Akahata, August 2, 2005
