24 JCP candidates elected in local assembly elections Twenty-four of 30 Japanese Communist Party candidates were elected in local assembly elections, including three by-elections on September 11 in one prefecture, seven cities, seven towns, and three villages. In the Settsu City (Osaka Prefecture) assembly election, all five JCP candidates were elected, increasing their combined votes by 866 over the previous election. In Habikino in the same prefecture, all four JCP candidates were elected to the city assembly. In the previous election, two of six JCP candidates were returned. The total number of votes for the four candidates show an increase of 1,697. In Kashiwabara City, Osaka, two of three JCP candidates were returned. In a by-election for the Iwaki City (Fukushima Prefecture) assembly, a first-time candidate came in third with 32,546 votes over three seats contested by four candidates. As a result, JCP seats in the assembly increased to four seats. In Uwajima City in Ehime Prefecture in Shikoku, one out of two incumbent JCP assembly members was returned. Three first-time candidates ran for three by-elections but were not elected.
