JCP requests ruling parties to withdraw proposal on standing committee The Japanese Communist Party on September 15 requested that the ruling parties withdraw their proposal for setting up a parliamentary standing committee on the Constitution. Speaking on behalf of the JCP at a meeting of Diet policy committee chairs, Keiji Kokuta said it is inappropriate for the ruling parties to make such an important proposal without steering committee discussions. Representatives of the Komei and Democratic parties admitted that there had been no discussions in the steering committee. Later in the day, the ruling parties decided to propose setting up a special committee, instead of a standing committee, to consider a bill on procedures for a national referendum on constitutional revision. -- Akahata September 16, 2005 |
