Citizens join with JCP and SDP in rally opposing constitutional revision Various citizens' groups on October 6 held a meeting in the House of Representatives Members' Office Building with Japanese Communist Party and Social Democratic Party Dietmembers to work together to further increase anti-constitutional revision movements. The House of Representatives special committee on the Constitution on the same day began discussing establishing national referendum procedures necessary for initiating a process for constitutional revision. JCP Executive Committee Chair Shii Kazuo in his speech said that anti-Constitution forces began discussing ways to establish a national referendum law with the aim of removing the war-renouncing Article 9. Shii pointed out that Prime Minister Koizumi Jun'ichiro wants to legitimize Japan's self-defense armed forces and remove the present constitutional ban on Japan from going to U.S. war, and said, "Informing the public of this attempt is essential for anti-constitutional revision forces to form a majority. The JCP will work together with you to defend Article 9." Social Democratic Party President Fukushima Mizuho called for a movement in opposition to a national referendum bill together with anyone who wants Article 9 to be defended. -- Akahata, October 7, 2005 |
