Governor and Mayor agree on opposition to deployment of U.S. nuclear-aircraft carrier The Kanagawa Prefectural Governor and Yokosuka City Mayor on November 1 confirmed that they will urge the Japanese and U.S. governments to withdraw their plan to deploy a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to Yokosuka Port. Governor Matsuzawa Shigefumi visited Yokosuka Mayor Kabaya Ryoichi and said, "The government immediately accepted the U.S. decision with no respect for the local call for a conventional aircraft carrier to be deployed. I question its sincerity." Kabaya also expressed his dissatisfaction with how the government treats local municipalities. Governor Matsuzawa said that he will visit the Defense Agency next week to protest against the interim report on the U.S. military realignment in Japan. He criticized the report for strengthening U.S. bases in Japan. -- Akahata, November 2, 2005 |
