Rengo's young workers: No political change can be expected from support for DPJ The Japanese Trade Union Confederation (Rengo), Japan's largest national trade union center, in its October Convention decided to continue its support for the opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). But a survey shows that 53.7 percent of Rengo's younger workers believe that no change can be expected from support for the DPJ. About 59 percent said they are reluctant to take part in election campaigns for candidates supported by Rengo. The survey shows that Rengo's younger workers hold a negative view of the DPJ and Rengo-led election campaigns although they may have a strong interest in politics. About 24 percent of the respondents said, "Rengo should end or reduce its support for a particular party or candidates" while only 3.2 percent answered in favor of Rengo's support for a particular party. Young Rengo members opinions "I don't oppose Rengo backing a political party but I can't understand why Rengo should support the DPJ since it has a lot in common with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party" (male in 20s). "Mobilization in election campaigns only helps increase public distrust of Rengo. I want the union to concentrate on its original activity as a trade union federation" (female in 20s). "Instead of coordinating with the DPJ, Rengo should increase its own labor movement from the viewpoint of workers and people" (male in 30s). -- Akahata, November 9, 2005 |
