DPJ leader outdoes LDP as advocate of constitutional revision: Ichida

Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Ichida Tadayoshi on December 12 criticized Democratic Party of Japan President Maehara Seiji for stating that constitutional revision is necessary to enable Japan to increase areas of its responsibility for "sea-lanes" defense. Ichida said, "Even the Liberal Democratic Party would not publicly say such a thing."

During his visit to the United States, Maehara also referred to China as a "real threat."

Commenting on Maehara's reference to China as a 'real threat' in his speech in Washington, D.C., Ichida said, "Although the United States essentially seeks one-country hegemony, its approach to China is now changing from its past view of China as a military rivalry to one of an economic partner. At a time when the United States is beginning to include diplomatic and peaceful approaches toward China, Japan's largest opposition party leader states that China is a real threat and calls for constitutional revision. How aberrant this is!"

Ichida said that the draft Resolution of the JCP 24th Congress gives an analysis of the DPJ that shows it is on the same track as the LDP in such basic national policies as constitutional revision and regressive tax increases."
