Hiroshima Mayor Akiba supports Gensuikyo's new anti-nuclear campaign Hiroshima City Mayor Akiba Tadatoshi has expressed his support for the new international signature campaign "For Swift Abolition of Nuclear Weapons" called for by the Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo). Akiba stated in his message, "At a time when the cycle of hatred, violence, and retaliation is continuing, there is still a large number of nuclear weapons existing on the earth, and the possibility that such weapons will be used is increasing." He added, "I sincerely hope that you will continue to make efforts and take actions with us for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the creation of lasting peace in the world." Launched on January 1, 2006, the campaign calls on the U.N. and all governments of nuclear and non-nuclear possessing countries to immediately start consultations on concluding an international convention for the total ban and elimination of nuclear weapons. So far, 39 organizations and 5 individuals of 17 countries, 7 international organizations, and 1 government official have expressed their support for the campaign. - Akahata, January 1, 2006 |
