Supplementary budget enacted The Liberal Democratic and Komei parties used their force of majority to railroad through a supplementary budget in the House of Councilors Plenary Session on February 3. The Japanese Communist, Social Democratic, and Democratic parties voted against. The 4.5-trillion yen supplementary budget, which became law on the same day, includes about 300-million yen earmarked for a survey of the site for constructing a new U.S. military base in Okinawa as well as for other items related to the U.S. military realignment policy. The JCP always takes a stance to support additional funding for disaster relief and opposes any money for military realignment. Although money for dealing with the asbestos problem was included in the supplementary budget thanks to the strength of citizen's movements, the measure is still insufficient. - Akahata, February 4, 2006 |
