Heavy cordon around SDF base in Tokyo The security cordon around Tokyo's Nerima Ward has been terrifying residents since about 150 members of the Ground Self-Defense Force left the base in the ward for Iraq on January 29. The unusual policing was made in the name of "preventing illegal actions from being perpetrated by organizations that oppose the sending of the SDF to Iraq." About 200 policemen are out to inquire or follow citizens they mark. A man from Chiba prefecture was questioned three times while he walked a few hundred meters from the railway station to the GSDF station. An arrangement was made to give the police free access to schools in the ward around-the-clock. SDF helicopters fly low overhead at every hour. Rightist groups were present and they carried out propaganda activities during the GSDF departing ceremony. The police tightened traffic regulations and increased "No Parking" zones, forcing citizens and businesses to endure inconveniences. - Akahata, February 10, 2006 |
