Rally held to block U.S. F-15 fighter jets relocation In Shintomi Town in Miyazaki Prefecture, about 600 residents took part in a rally on February 19 in protest against the planned relocation of U.S. F-15 fighter aircraft units from the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa to the Air Self-Defense Force Nyutabaru Base located in the town. Japanese Communist Party House of Councilors member Nihi Sohei in a speech pointed out that since 1964 the ASDF Nyutabaru base has caused 26 aircraft crashes including deadly accidents. He said, "Heavy noise pollution prevents Shintomi residents from living in peace. Let us develop our movement with local municipalities to block the strengthening of the base." Participants adopted an appeal expressing determination to increase activities against the U.S. military realignment and in defense of Article 9 of the Constitution in order to create a war-free Japan and world. After the rally, participants marched in demonstration through shopping streets with placards reading, "Don't bring U.S. troops," and "Love Peace." - Akahata, February 20, 2006 |
