Residents protest Japan-U.S. joint exercise

In Nagi Town in Okayama Prefecture in western Japan, about 700 people on February 26 took part in a rally in protest against Japan-U.S. military exercises held for the first time at the Self-Defense Forces training grounds at Nihonbara.

The Ground Self-Defense Force and the U.S. Marine Corps held a joint exercise February 20-24 for anti-guerrilla warfare training.

Speaking at the rally on behalf of the Japanese Communist Party, Nihi Sohei of the House of Councilors said, "The Japan-U.S. agreement of October 2005 was about turning Japan into a stepping-stone for U.S. preemptive wars. We must not allow our land to be used for training military forces in preparation for aggression abroad.
